One reason I am drawn to painting and drawing analog, and not so much on screen, is the tangible aspect of it. I absolutely love digging my hands into different art supplies, trying new mediums, and experimenting with the limitations and possibilities of each material.
When I stumbled upon a YouTube video about mixed media, I was completely blown away. First of all—why had I never tried this on paper? As a motion designer, I’ve always been inspired by the combination of different techniques and mediums, but somehow it never occurred to me to try them out on paper. What excited me the most was the idea of letting go, trusting the process, and simply having fun for the sake of creating.
I immediately gathered all kinds of materials I could find in my studio and started to make a mess… and it was beautiful. Not worrying about the outcome, letting go of any filter—just pure joy.
After layering paint, materials, and textures, mixing them together with different tools, I ended up with something I would consider abstract art. And I liked it—but I wasn’t done yet.
Drawing and designing characters is my all-time favorite thing to do, so I couldn’t ignore the urge to add a character to the piece. This time, however, I wanted to work with fine, deliberate lines to create a contrast between the detailed character design and the bold, uncontrolled chaos of the background.
Using mixed media opened an almost forgotten door—a place where making art is simply a playful game, free from any preoccupation with the final result. Just the joy of creating.
