MUSHROOM CULT
Gouache & inc on paper
How it came to this painting
This piece was created immediately after finishing a motion design project for a client. I had just spent several weeks producing a very slick, corporate explainer video with clean vector illustrations. Once the project was delivered, I felt a huge urge to get my hands dirty, using brush and paint and get off the screen.
The idea
Cooking is one of my passions, and while preparing dinner the other day, I peeled some mushrooms out of their plastic wrapper. The black soil sprinkled on top caught my attention. It looked odd, especially since the whole package appeared so neat and sterile. My mind started to wander, and I wondered if this soil was added intentionally to make the food look more “natural.” Marketing has become such a powerful force—everything nowadays is supposed to be homemade, organic, eco-friendly, or artisan.
The making
I’ve always loved comics—the storytelling, the compositions, and the art form as a whole—but I had never actually tried creating one myself. Composition was something I wanted to practice more in my drawings. So I decided to create my first little comic strip, putting my thoughts on food supply in our society onto paper, using gouache and ink.
